Folic Acid (Known as Folate or Vitamin B9)

Folic acid, also known as folate or vitamin B9, is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions. It is essential for the synthesis and repair of DNA, the production of red blood cells, and the metabolism of amino acids. Folic acid is particularly important during periods of rapid cell division and growth, such as pregnancy and infancy.

Prevention of Neural Tube Defects: Adequate intake of folic acid before and during early pregnancy can significantly reduce the risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida and anencephaly, in newborns.

Supports Red Blood Cell Formation: Folic acid is necessary for the production of red blood cells. Deficiency in folic acid can lead to megaloblastic anemia, a condition characterized by large, immature red blood cells.

Promotes Brain Health: Folic acid is involved in neurotransmitter synthesis and helps support cognitive function. Some studies suggest that adequate levels of folic acid may lower the risk of age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.
